brushing

Brushing a dog plays not only an important role in keeping him in good shape but also is the most important tool for early detection of many health issues.

Brushing your dog correctly

will provide visual contact with every inch of the dog’s body, making it easier to identify scratches, bumps, allergic skin irritations, ear problems, fleas and other parasites, and the list goes on.

Some problems that are discovered early enough can be treated at home. Those that require veterinary care will probably come with more manageable vet bills because they were discovered early, but, most important, early detection will most likely be less painful for the dog and provide a greater chance of a faster healing. When overlooked, minor issues can escalate and become expensive, painful, and sometimes life-threatening health problems.

On an emotional level, brushing is very similar to petting. In the wild, grooming is one of the actions that will establish social status and one of the main bonding experiences. By brushing your dog, you are establishing who is in charge, and you will send a message of love, caring, and protection, making the relationship with your dog much deeper and gaining the dog’s respect and trust.

Daily Brushing

Regardless of the kind of coat the dog has, daily brushing will prevent long coats from matting, remove dead coat, and reinforce the blood circulation to the top layers of the skin, tightening up the hair follicles. This keeps the coat and skin in great shape, reduces shedding and ingrown hairs (which can trigger hot spots), and helps to distribute the dog’s natural oils, keeping the hair healthy and shiny.
